Riverside, California Police RAID Innocent Car Enthusiast Gathering.
Over 100 police officers from of nine different agencies in Riverside, California
were sent to surround and raid an innocent gathering of automotive enthusiasts.
As is common across the country, import enthusiasts met up in a closed shopping
center parking lot Friday night to see friends, check out new mods (like Illstreet’s
carbon
fiber hoods) and swap stories. Around 11:00 pm, police were paid overtime
to surround the group of enthusiasts and block all
of the exits in an organized raid involving around fifty police cruisers. Officers
then began a WARRANTLESS search and interrogation of the people involved and
over 150 vehicles that were present.
As officers pointed out modifications to cars, they ignorantly asked questions
like, “If you’re not into street racing, why would you need that?”
They also asked why enthusiasts would want “more power going to their
car” if they were not interested in racing other cars.
Police accused the owners of PARKED cars of being street racers and issued
98 citations for engine modifications, tinted windows, paperwork violations
and lack of a front license plate. Those enthusiasts that just received citations
were the lucky ones; twenty vehicles were confiscated and impounded.
Other than the police labeling the Canyon Crossing Shopping Center as a street
racing hangout, the police offered absolutely no evidence that any street racing
actually took place.
According to publicly available information, the CHP issued a total of over
100,000 “modified car” citations worth $10.5 million in 2004.
Evidently those numbers did not satisfy legislators because in 2005, the California
Office of Traffic Safety gave Riverside Police $400,000 in federal and state
gas tax revenue to establish “a regional task force to conduct enforcement
operations targeting street racing, modified vehicle and speed contests (June
2007 Riverside Police Chief’s Report). Again in 2008 Riverside police
received another $503,268 grant for selective enforcement against street racing.

Spartanburg Native and Owner of Carbon Fiber Hood Distributor Is 2008
SBA Young Entrepreneur of the Year for South Carolina
MEDIA RELEASE
SBA SOUTH CAROLINA DISTRICT OFFICE
SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Christopher Osborne, is the 2008 U.S. Small Business
Administration (SBA) Young Entrepreneur of the Year. Osborne is owner and CEO
of Illstreet, the largest distributor
of carbon fiber car hoods
in the United States. He was nominated by Jill Burroughs, Director of the Clemson
Regional Small Business Development Center, and Elaine Smith, owner of Benchmark
Outsourcing Group. "Ever since I can remember, I've been trying
to sell, trade or buy things," Osborne wrote in a paper for a class at
Clemson University. After receiving his own computer in sixth grade, he developed
his first successful Web site. By high school, he had combined his business
acumen and love of computer code and - driven by his desire for expensive new
car tires - started designing Web sites for businesses on a referral basis.
In 2000, while he was still in high school, Osborne started a non-profit regional
Web forum for the advancement
of motor sports. In January 2004, as a freshman at Clemson University, he transformed
the forum into Illstreet, a small Web-based company selling carbon
fiber car hoods - a $39 million industry - and Wings West body
kits. This past summer, Illstreet caught the attention of USA Today,
which consulted Osborne for an article on the rising cost of carbon fiber; his
comments ran in USA Today on June 6, 2007.
Illstreet continues to not only thrive, but also grow. Harkening
back to Osborne's early entrepreneurial roots, Illstreet recently acquired a Web consulting company to engage a new customer market.
Through Illstreet's new consulting sector, Osborne assists small businesses with Web site design and hosting services.
Osborne graduated with honors from Clemson in December 2007.
Christopher Osborne will be honored at the SBA South Carolina
District Office's small business awards ceremony, part of the
Salute to
Small Business on Tuesday, April 1, at the Columbia Metropolitan
Convention Center.
All SBA programs and services are provided on a non-discriminatory
basis.

was purchased in 2003 for use as the illstreet car. The car is about to be back
on the road with a new, bridgeported engine, 18 wheeler turbo, gigantic intercooler
and of course a Kirk Racing roll cage. The goal for the car is approx. 550 hp.
